About the Founder of Español a la Carta
¡Hola! Encantada de conocerte (Nice to meet you!)
My name is Irma Esquivel-Kromis. I was raised in México where I obtained my Bachelors Degree in English. I came to the United States in 1986 to master my English and intended to teach it in Mexico.
My destiny changed while I was living in L.A. I got married in 1988 and adopted a new life here in the United States. I started teaching Spanish to Adults in Virginia in 1994. Then I saw the need to become a certified Spanish teacher. With that as a goal I earned a Masters Degree in Spanish at the George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
Teaching has been my lifelong passion for almost 20 years. I love sharing our rich culture and the beauty of our language. I believe that learning the culture is an essential part of being able to interact with and understand people when traveling or communicating with others. Therefore, in my classes I include music, poems, short stories, news, history and other fun and engaging real-life situation activities.
I have also led study trips to Mexico and Guatemala for students who wish to improve their language skills. Last year, I led an educational trip to Cuba with some of my students and their spouses. The experience was unforgettable. I am planning to offer more trips to other Spanish speaking countries to expose the students to the culture, language and the wonderful and friendly people.
I have tailored various courses throughout the years. Some of the fields are: Medical, Teaching and in the Hotel Industry. I have also developed courses in Survival Spanish, Pronunciation, and the latest one, Spanish through Culture and Literature. (Read more about this course)
I enjoy all aspects of teaching and getting to know people. My biggest reward is to hear a student speaking Spanish.
Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. I will be glad to help you!
