Education and Experience

BA in English  -  Universidad de Colima, Mexico
MA in Spanish -  George Mason University, Fairfax Virginia
TESL Certificate – UCSB

I am a native Spanish speaker, fluent in Spanish and English. I was born,  raised and educated in Mexico. I have been teaching Spanish for 20+ years primarily to adults.
I taught 5 years in Virginia and I’ve been teaching at SBCC-Adult Education (now Center for Lifelong Learning (CLL) ) in Santa Barbara, Ca since 1998.
My experience includes teaching all levels of Spanish, including some conversation classes. I also taught a Telenovela (soap opera) course in Virginia that lasted two years and retained all the students thru the end.
Besides the regular structured grammar classes, I have developed the following courses:

  • Practical English for the Hospitality Industry.  Hotel Hyatt, Fairfax, Virginia
  • Spanish for future k-6 teachers,  Antioch University, Santa Barbara, CA
  • Spanish Survival,  Antioch University, Santa Barbara, CA
  • Medical Spanish,  Visiting Nursing Home, Santa Barbara, CA
  • Pronunciation Workshop, SBCC Adult Education
  • Spanish through Culture & Literature, SBCC Adult Education (CLL)

I have led trips to Mexico, Guatemala and Cuba. The students get the opportunity to study and practice their Spanish while they are attending classes and living with local families. These trips have been very successful and I will continue doing them to give the students the experience of a total immersion language learning.
